HADDON HALL LAKE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT HAS STARTED

Another exciting project to improve our community’s amenities has just begun and will be completed during the month of June.

BACKGROUND:  The Lake Improvement project was approved by both the Haddon Hall & Golders Green Boards two months ago.  The project was awarded to Fosters Lake & Pond Management, who currently manages the lake, because of their expertise in lake projects, the environmental friendly design aspects they proposed, and overall cost for the project.

This project is being coordinated by Don Brandt, Haddon Hall Grounds Committee Chair, with involvement from Brenda Smith, Golders Green Grounds Committee Chair.

PRIMARY PROJECT GOALS:
1)       Correct erosion problems along the paved walkway
2)       Improve safety along the shoreline and embankment areas
3)       Lake area beautification – establish grass and new trees

BASIC PROJECT SCOPE:
1)     Area affected: Area between the shoreline and the paved walkway from the dam breast foot bridge to the Apex Peakway-end of the shoreline adjacent to the Golders Green townhouses.
2)     Reduce water level –  started late May
a.     What & How: The water level of the lake is currently being lowered by gravity-flow to enable work in the lakebed.
b.     Benefits: Gravity flow of water is quiet and occurs around the clock.
3)     Soil excavation – begin approx. June 1st
a.     What: Eliminate steep shoreline drop-off by extending shoreline using compactable soil from lakebed, remove topsoil from the lakebed to replace soil in eroded areas, extend storm water culverts, remove existing maple trees and submerse in lake for fish habitat.  Place permanent erosion control matting in high-water flow areas and along shoreline to prevent future soil erosion.
b.     How: Use of track excavation equipment during normal work hours
c.     Benefits: Uses soil that’s readily available.  Increases water depth which improves health of the lake.  Provide for fish habitat.
4)     Plant grass & trees – mid June
a.     What: Truck-in organic topsoil for soil enhancement, Hydroseed and water Bermuda grass see and apply applications of “Flight Control” to deter geese.  Plant new bald cypress trees
b.     Benefits: Drought- and heat-tolerant Bermuda grass should grow better than fescue.  Flight Control is to deter geese from eating the grass as it is getting established.  Bald cypress trees do better in potentially wet soil conditions than the current maples which do not like wet roots.
5)     Allow lake water level to return to normal levels

For any questions or concerns regarding this project, please contact Grounds Committee chair, Don Brandt.

Improvements to the Haddon Hall Recreation Area

After several years of delay, work is almost done on the "Master Plan" for the recreational area on Haywards Heath Drive.

Residents will enjoy new picnic areas, a new playground, expanded parking that will serve as a basketball court in off-peak times and other aesthetic and structural improvements.

The plan is being administered by the engineering firm, CLH Design. Capital Paving was selected to complete the majority of the structural work.

A photo album of Master Plan construction progress is now online.

Site Drawings can be found on the Documents sub-page.

Clubhouse

The clubhouse is located at 1101 Haywards Heath Ln, near the intersection of Haywards Heath Ln and Blackburn Rd. It is used for community meetings, functions and social events. The clubhouse can be rented by Haddon Hall residents.  Contact HRW for available dates.

 Trails

The walking trails in Haddon Hall are maintained by the Town of Apex and wind through wooded areas of Haddon Hall.

The City provides "doggie bags" at various spots along the path for the convenience of those who enjoy the path with their dogs and as a courtesy of those who enjoy the path without their pets.

 Ponds

Haddon Hall maintains two ponds, the larger of the two having a path from Haywards Heath to Apex Peakway. It is a popular site for walking, jogging, biking, fishing or just counting the ducks.
